A man so loyal to his family that he was willing to bear the weight of their expectations in order to protect them. A man who loves completely. A man who beats himself up over his perceived failures even when things are completely out of his control.

Now, our hearts pound against each other, our hot breath mingling as we try to regain control of our bodies, and it might as well be that morning. When I woke and saw the message from Dad that he was coming for me. When I wrote that damn note and then stared at “Nolan” for what felt like an hour, memorizing every feature while he slept peacefully, expecting me to be there when he woke.

All the regrets I had that morning come rushing back, and tears begin to pool in my eyes. Isaac nuzzles the side of my neck and presses a soft kiss there, sagging even farther onto me, like he’s trying to melt there until we’re so entwined it will be impossible to separate us.

Maybe it’s working because even with all the turmoil swirling around us, a sense of peace finally settles over me. I have no right to be feeling it, not with so much uncertainty, with so many conflicting desires warring within me.

Wanting to have my own life, to go to school and be anyone else.

Finally, Isaac rolls to the side, bringing me with him, and wraps his arms around me with his right hand nestled under my cheek. He brushes his fingers over my temple, and I open my eyes and meet his heavy-lidded ones.

“You’re not leaving.”
